Liderzy ruchu Kukiza ujawnili swoje libertariańskie skłonności

Wednesday, June 17, 2015
>>more...

Joseph Margoshes (1866-1955) emigrated to the USA about 1900, and wrote this memoir in Yiddish in 1936. It focuses on the Jewish experience, primarily in the Lwow-Tarnow area, and mostly during 1880-1900. Eksterminacja Plakow na Wolyniu

Tuesday, June 2, 2015
>>more...

Myths and realities in eastern Europe

Wednesday, May 27, 2015
The author surveys the claims of nations and nationalities in some detail. Unfortunately, he treats all the conflicting claims on a more-or-less coeval basis—as if all the claims had equivalent credibility and support.

I focus on a few items of lasting interest.

Jewish assimilation

Wednesday, May 27, 2015
The obvious theme of this work is Polish-Ukrainian-Jewish coexistence in Lwow (Lviv). This work is full of information, and I focus on a few items of historical--rather than cultural--interest.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS

Lwow (Lviv) was not founded by Danylo, as commonly taught. It long had preceded him. In fact, it is much older than anyone had imagined. Archeological evidence, cited from a Ukrainian-language source, indicates that the site of Lviv has been continuously inhabited since the 5th century A. D. (Yaroslav Hrytsak, p. 48).
