: A World Problem: Jews-Poland-Humanity - A Psychological and Historical Study. Translated from Polish (Paperback)

Tuesday, March 1, 2016
Nowadays, books on Polish-Jewish relations adhere to the Manichean view of the Jewish victim and the intolerant Pole. [This has been a trope in Jewish writing for at least a century, as is obvious from p. 67]. The present book may go too far in the opposite direction. If so, the student of Polish-Jewish relations can use this book to counterbalance the other, modern extreme, and come up with a middle, Judeorealistic view of Jewish-Polish relations. >>more...

Polish Peasant National Consciousness Long Preceded the End of Serfdom. Reciprocity of Polish-Jewish Antagonisms,The Nation in the Village: The Genesis of Peasant National Identity in Austrian Poland, 1848-1914 (Paperback)

Wednesday, February 10, 2016
The term "peasant", a somewhat ambiguous term, refers to the smallholder who, before their emancipation of 1848 in Austrian-ruled Galicia, had worked the landlord's estate in exchange for the right to farm small plots. Among the Poles of Galicia, Prussia, and Russia, peasants constituted 80-85% of the population, along with 8-10% gentry landholders (SZLACHTA), a small intelligentsia (clergy and teachers), and 2-3% of what the author calls wealthy aristocrats. (p. 11). >>more...

Jewish Life in the Towns of Eastern Europe Before WWII,

Thursday, February 4, 2016
It is a well-known fact that Europeans sometimes thought that Jews steal Christian children for purposes of ritual murder. Interestingly, among Jewish folk tales, there was a counterpart to this myth. Jews taught that Gypsies (Sinti and Roma) kidnap Jewish children from their parents. (p. 91). For more on this, please click on, and read my detailed review of, and comment under, The Janowska Road. >>more...
