Jewish Poland Revisited: Heritage Tourism in Unquiet Places (New Anthropologies of Europe;Features Candor on the Depth and the Pathology of Modern Jewish Polonophobia

Saturday, June 10, 2017
This book can be useful for those readers interested in a compendium of Polish-Jewish interactions in modern Poland. Most of it, however, is standard fare (as elaborated in the latter part of my review). The most distinctive part of the book is as follows:

NOT GERMANY, POLAND: A UNIQUELY MALEVOLENT PLACE—IN THE JEWISH MIND >>more...

Auschwitz, Poland, and the Politics of Commemoration, 1945-1979 (Polish and Polish American Studies;Refutes the “Hide Jewish Deaths” Polonophobic Myth. The Rest is the Standard Judeocentric Fare,

Much of this book simply repeats the usual memes found in countless other books on Poles and Jews. For instance, there is the mystification of the Holocaust conducted by Jan Blonski and Michael Steinlauf. There is mention, yet again, of Poles thinking themselves the “Jesus Christ of Nations”, as if this was some kind of disease from which Poles must be cured so that they will finally do the right thing and fall down in obeisance to Jewish ways of thinking. >>more...

Post-Communist Restitution and the Rule of Law

Saturday, June 3, 2017
This book wades into a lot of legalese detail, and it is not always easy to figure out what the author is driving at. However, there are a number of salient themes, which I discuss:

HOLOCAUST INDUSTRY: ARE JEWS SUPPOSED TO BE ENTITLED TO SPECIAL RIGHTS?

Although he does not put it in these words, author Csongor Kuti seems to be ambivalent on this question. He writes,

Revealing Insights into Israeli Teenagers' Holocaust-Related Visits to Poland

"Over the past two decades, the Shoah has come to play an increasingly significant role in Israeli collective memory and civil religion". (p. 1). This book provides valuable information about the Israeli visits to Poland, covering nearly every aspect of their occurrence in encyclopedic detail. The Israeli voyages to Poland have grown from 400 visitors in 1988 to over 28,000 in 2005. (p. 249). >>more...

Jewish Presence in Absence: The Aftermath of the Holocaust in Poland, 1944 2010;Holocaust Industry 1997 Act is Legally Baseless. Polish-Jewish Two-Way Prejudices. 1968 Jew-Removal Insights,

Most of this work is nothing new: It largely consists of all the customary Pole-accusing and Holocaust Supremacist memes. Moreover, Polish scholars who dissent from the standard Judeocentric narrative are labelled “right wing” or “nationalist”. [If name-calling is to be done at all, then why, instead of using misleading and emotive terms such as “nationalist” on one hand and “not real Poles” on the other, not call them “Judeo-independent” on one hand and “Judeo-compliant” on the other?] >>more...

The Talmud and Anti-Semitism: The Essence of Anti-Semitism: The Reality of Better and Worse Sorts of Poles, as Benign, Goodhearted People say: “He’s an honest man, despite the fact that he’s a Jew.”

Monday, May 29, 2017
“The biggest Jewish tragedy is not that anti-Semites hate Jews, but that benign, goodhearted people say: He’s an honest man, despite the fact that he is a Jew.” TadeuszMazowiecki   quoted these words by Ludwik Hirsfeld at the start of an essay written in 1962 in the Polish periodical Wiez (Joint). As a point of departure in his research, this author took three articles written by Father Waldemar Szczerbinski, Allan Hart, and himself (Mazowiecki) >>more...

THE YIDDISHIST MOVEMENT: SELF-ATHEIZATION AND AN AGGRESSIVE, POLITICIZED SEPARATISM

The Yiddishist movement was a fairly recent development. Barry Trachtenberg comments, “For much of the modern period, Yiddish was not considered much more than a corrupt dialect of a so-called pure German, even by many of its own speakers, until the beginning of the twentieth century.” (p. 214). [And yet the Endeks, notably Roman Dmowski, are faulted for thinking along the same lines.] >>more...

MYTH: POLAND HID JEWISH DEATHS AT AUSCHWITZ

Saturday, May 27, 2017
So Poland (until recent decades), concealed Jewish deaths, or just mixed up Polish and Jewish deaths at the hands of the Germans (Nazis), under the rubric of "Polish citizens" or "Victims of Fascism". And this—horror of horrors-- implied that Jews and Poles suffered equally.

DOUBLY WRONG.

But wait, it gets even better. According to Jan T. Gross, Poles felt guilty about not helping the Jews enough and—what’s more---had a deep-seated guilt complex for acquiring post-Jewish properties. And so Poles, until recently, conveniently and deliberately forgot about the Jews >>more...
