Deadly Embrace: Hitler, Stalin and the Nazi-Soviet Pact, 1939-1941

Sunday, July 13, 2014
Better Title: A History of the Early Part of the Eastern European Theater of WWII. "Poles To Take Berlin" Irony, July 11, 2014 This review is from: Deadly Embrace: Hitler, Stalin and the Nazi-Soviet Pact, 1939-1941 (Hardcover) This work is loaded with information about personages and events. However, it is less about Hitler, Stalin, and the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact than it is about the events that preceded the German-Soviet conquest of Poland in 1939, through the events encompassing the early part of Operation Barbarossa---Nazi Germany having turned against its erstwhile Soviet ally (June 1941) >>more...

Suitors and Suppliants : The Little Nations at Versailles

Sunday, July 13, 2014
By way of introduction, author Stephen Bonsal was an American diplomat, journalist, war correspondent, and translator. It was in the latter capacity that he served President Woodrow Wilson during the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. This book features informal discussions about such things as the Balfour Declaration, the relationship between Croats and Serbs, the ownership of the city of Fiume, the German confiscation of Schleswig-Holstein from the Danes, and the Polish delegation at Versailles. I now focus on the latter. >>more...

Intermarium: The Land between the Black and Baltic Seas

Sunday, June 15, 2014
History and collective memories influence a nation, its culture, and institutions; hence, its domestic politics and foreign policy. That is the case in the Intermarium, the land between the Baltic and Black Seas in Eastern Europe. The area is the last unabashed rampart of Western Civilization in the East, and a point of convergence of disparate cultures. >>more...

The Warriors: My Life As A Jewish Soviet Partisan (Religion, Theology, and the Holocaust) Paperback Germen killed Jews in Jedwabne

Sunday, June 15, 2014
Zissman describes a time a prewar Poland during which he had a rosy view of Communism. He does not explain how he could have thought this in view of such things as the ruthless totalitarianism and the removal of Jews from top positions in the Soviet Union by Stalin in the mid-1930's. Or how could he be ignorant of these facts? >>more...

The Holocaust in the East: Local Perpetrators and Soviet Responses (Pitt Russian East European)

Sunday, June 15, 2014
Most of this anthology is about the unfolding Holocaust in Nazi German occupied eastern Poland, western Soviet Union, and eastern Romania. I limit my review to general comments about the USSR and specific comments about Poland. This book is of variable quality (hence my 3-star rating), and much of it (especially Marci Shore's chapter on Jedwabne) rehashes old information >>more...

Jews, Liquor, and Life in the Kingdom of Poland

Sunday, May 18, 2014
This review is from: Yankel's Tavern: Jews, Liquor, and Life in the Kingdom of Poland (Hardcover) The author has written a fascinating study that exhibits an obvious attempt at even-handedness. However, in common with many works on this subject, it treats Jews primarily as the servants of nobles and rulers, and devotes insufficient attention to the decision-making freedoms of Jews. The time period of this book is the late 1700's through the mid- and late-1800's, the era of Partition and post-Partition Poland. >>more...

His Social and Economic Value Polish Jew

Sunday, May 18, 2014
This British author's understanding of Jews is quite different from that of westerners [review based on the original 1906 edition], and she points out that her conclusions are supported by eight years' residence in Russian-ruled central Poland. (see the Preface). >>more...
