This fascinating, scholarly work begins with a large amount of Jewish demographic detail. At the time of the destruction of the Second temple (65), the Jewish population of the Middle East, North Africa, and eventual Europe was in the 2.5-8.0 million range. Lewinski-Corwin covers a lot of Polish history and, owing to the breadth and depth of the material, I only focus on a few issues. His work is especially useful in understanding the course of the anti-Russian November Insurrection (1830)(pp. 426-on) and the January Insurrection (1863)(pp. 471-on). His treatment of the late 19th century Prussian exploitation of Poland, and how the Poles thwarted and outdid the Germans, is recounted in considerable detail. (pp. 521-527). >>more...

This anthology not only discusses the situation in Russia just before the Russian Revolution, but also gives much information about foreign-ruled Poland in the late 19th and early 20th century. I focus mainly on the latter.

The savagery of the German occupation of northwestern Poland is recounted by Roman Dmowski, (quote) In the years just prior to the War the papers brought them occasional news about a desperate struggle for existence going on in German Poland, about the unheard-of measures employed by the Germans for the purpose of destroying the Polish nationality, about the law to expropriate Polish landed estates, about the Polish children being flogged because they insisted on praying in their mother tongue, and so on." To anyone who has carefully examined this work, and heard Ewa Kurek speak (I have), it is obvious that her level of knowledge is far above that of the usual authors on this subject. Neo-Stalinists and Polonophobes can dismiss and name-call all they want, but the facts presented in this work remain facts nonetheless. In addition, Kurek is even-handed, and realizes that she will "get it" from both sides, "Some Jews will accuse me of anti-Semitism, and some Poles will say I slander my own nation. I just can't help it." (p. 2). She accepts the premise that Jewish criticisms of past Polish conduct may be valid (p. 108), definitely embraces unilateral Polish guilt for Jedwabne (p. 302), and elaborates on and strongly condemns Polish blackmailers and denouncers of fugitive Jews. Jankiel (Yankiel) Wiernik is one of the few Jewish forced laborers at Treblinka to have escaped from this Nazi German factory of death, and lived to tell the world about it. He had various jobs at the camp, including the construction of more and ever-larger gas chambers (p. 18). There is no reason for questioning the veracity of what Wiernik has written. He reports the emanation of steam from intertwined layers of corpses on a hot day (p. 39). [Decomposition of bodies is an exothermic reaction]. Either Wiernik had arcane knowledge of the chemistry of putrefaction, or he actually saw what he claimed to have seen. >>more...

This book provides much detail, of which one review can only cover a little. Particularly interesting are items about Jewish successes in such things as medicine, science, Hollywood, banking, capitalism, and Communism.

The blood libel directed against Jews preceded Christianity, and accusations of ritual murder were sometimes directed at the early Christians. (p. 31). In the Middle Ages, Jews enjoyed almost near universal literacy because of religious obligations. (p. 133). During this time, Maimonides taught that the human-like attributes of God, including forgiveness, were merely human ideas about what God is like and how God acts. Other rabbis declared his works heretical, and burned them. (p. 10) >>more...
